Embedded development can be divided into three categories: hardware development, driver development, and software development:
1. Embedded hardware development
The work of embedded hardware development is to design technical solutions and refine technical solutions based on user needs and product manager requirements, and design circuit principles. This process includes proposing technical solutions, reviewing technical solutions, selecting hardware chips/components, and implementing the principles of technical solutions. Undoubtedly, hardware development requires understanding and proficiency in hardware.
2. Embedded driver development
This position is available in large companies, but may be cancelled in small companies. The job responsibility of this position is to write driver programs. What is a driver program, which lies between hardware and software, and forms software instructions/code through hardware interfaces. Convenient for programmers to call, which avoids programmers directly understanding hardware principles and only requires calling the corresponding driver interface.
This position is for software development services, requiring familiarity with hardware interfaces, knowledge of hardware working processes, and the ability to generate callable code. So, it is necessary to understand hardware.
3. Embedded software development
This position is actually within the scope of programmers, but compared to upper computer programmers and website programmers, it is still relatively hard because it involves hardware programming. The platform it faces is an industrial control board, which includes microcontrollers, ARM, DSP, etc. However, all the hardware interfaces used have been prepared by the driver developers. When controlling hardware, only the driver interface needs to be called. In small companies, driver development and software development are put together, and even in smaller companies, hardware design, driver design, and software design are all done by one person, combining software and hardware. So, embedded software development still needs to understand some hardware.
